GOLDEN RULES | Get off the beaten track

Golden BC is situated just three hours from Calgary airport between the Rocky and Columbia Mountains. This unique location in the majestic Purcell, Selkirk and Rocky Mountain ranges creates a magical winter season that boasts some of the driest and most abundant champagne powder in Canada — perfect for world-class skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. Located close to five of the most stunning National Parks Canada has to offer: Banff, Glacier, Kootenay, Mount Revelstoke and Yoho, a stay in Golden offers some of the best scenery and outdoor recreation adventure opportunities available anywhere in the world.

Not only is Golden a place of spectacular scenery, but it’s also an authentic mountain town that offers a rich history of mountain adventure tourism, and a vibrant arts and culture scene with live performances, art exhibits, and the annual Snow King’s Masque Parade — all of which makes for a cool mountain town vibe. This is a town lived in, and loved, by a community who are proud of their heritage and are always ready with a warm welcome for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages, interests, and skill levels.

Golden is a winter mountain playground with something for everyone, from hard-core alpinists, to multigenerational families. Famous for its steep chutes and bowls, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort also offers excellent groomed runs for beginner and intermediate skiers. But it doesn’t end there; Golden also offers a ton of fun things to do off the slopes.

Renting snowshoes, or cross-country skis, and heading out to the maintained trails at the Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre is always a favorite, not least due to the heated log chalet that provides a place to warm up and chill out, but why not venture out to the nearby Moonraker Trails, or to Yoho National Park — just 30 minutes from Golden — where you’re likely to be breaking your own trail like a true explorer.

A family dog-sled tour through the majestic Selkirk Mountains is another wonderful experience, but one thing that should be on everyone’s bucket list is a Walk with the Wolves at the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre. It’s not every day that you can get up close for amazing photography with these misunderstood creatures.

If your preference is for a little more horsepower, get revved up on a guided snowmobile tour. Golden has outfits that cater to families and beginners, as well as more experienced mountain sledders.

Wherever you find yourself, you’re likely to make friends with local families and outdoor enthusiasts, but never more so than at one of the community skating rinks, tobogganing at Snake Hill, or cheering the local hockey team, the Golden Rockets.

Golden has lots of different accommodations to provide rest and relaxation at the end of a fun-filled, snow-packed day. Families will enjoy larger luxury mountain homes, or a slope-side condo such as those offered by Lush Mountain Accommodations and Kicking Horse Lodging, or chalets that offer multiple bedrooms, full kitchens, and plenty of space for everyone. Couples may prefer a cozy cabin in the valley with a view of the mountains from a private hot tub, a friendly B&B with home-cooked breakfast, or even a heli-access only backcountry lodge for a true off-the-beaten track experience.

Whatever your preference, for those looking for pure unrefined mountain adventure, Golden is the real thing. To plan your Golden winter adventure visit tourismgolden.com/plan.
