If outdoor recreation is your thing. Franklin County, in the northwest corner of Massachusetts is where you want to be. Rivers and streams abound for the serious or occasional fisherman, canoeist or swimmer. The more adventuresome will find choices of white-water rafting, zip-lining, hiking, biking and skiing. If you like a slower pace, there are abundant spots for birding, a simple nature walk, latte in a café or browsing one of the many antique shops full of someone’s past treasures.
Shopping is fun – nothing huge, but comfortable artisan galleries of handmade pottery, jewelry, and recycled inspirations. and lots of candles! Yankee Candle Flagship Store and Chandler’s Restaurant in South Deerfield where one can spend one hour or almost all day. Just north of Greenfield is Kringle Candle, another great stop for gifts or home goods enhanced by lunch or dinner at the Farm Table.
Spend a day in old New England. Visit Historic Deerfield, an authentic 18th-century New England village, beautifully restored museum houses with period architecture and furnishings.
Curl up at night in a charming country inn or bed & breakfast where you might meet travelers from throughout the world. Nothing beats fresh fruit, pancakes with local maple syrup, hot tea or coffee and stimulating conversation. The comfort of wi-fi is ubiquitous if you want it or need it. But if you really want a getaway, bring a good book and pick up a bottle of hard cider from one of our valley orchards. Our Annual CiderDays is held the first weekend in November and draws both domestic and international cidermakers and cider lovers to the many workshops and tastings.
