Discover Golden’s Secrets

The secret of Golden, British Columbia is beginning to reveal itself. For the uninitiated, it might be easy to mistake this small mountain town in the heart of the Canadian Rockies for just another rest stop on the Trans-Canada Highway on the way from Banff to Vancouver, but increasingly people are falling for its small-town charm, invigorating, often world-class, outdoor adventure activities, and stunning scenery.

Often overlooked for its more famous neighbour of Banff, the town of Golden gives access to the famous Banff National Park and Lake Louise in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, as well as the lesser known (and therefore less busy) Yoho, Glacier, and Mount Revelstoke National Parks — each offering their own stunning alpine peaks, lakes, and unique history that hikers, history nuts and wildlife enthusiasts alike will love to explore.

But wait…Golden has so much more to offer.

Adrenalin junkies will love the chance to tandem skydive or paraglide between two mountain ranges, raft the famous whitewater of the Kicking Horse River, or rev up a quad on a guided ATV tour. Gentler souls might prefer to rent a canoe or stand-up paddleboard to explore the Columbia River and Wetlands — one of the most ecologically significant treasures in the world. A walk with the wolves at the Northern Lights Wolf Wildlife Centre is a bucket list item, great for photographers and nature enthusiasts, and an opportunity to learn about these misunderstood creatures.

A visit to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort will thrill most people. The gondola ride to 8,000 feet reveals panoramic mountain vistas with very little effort and offers easy ridge hikes, as well as the opportunity to dine at one of Canada’s highest restaurants. Whilst the laid-back lounge over lunch, the adventurers can head over to the Via Ferrata. Meaning “iron road” in Italian, Via Ferrata refers to the steel cable attached to the rock face that offers a safe introduction to climbing. And don’t forget to visit Boo at the Grizzly Bear Refuge; often entertaining, and always educational.

One of the best kept secrets has been the incredible fishing that can be had in the lakes and rivers surrounding Golden. Guided fishing outfits can help you find the best catch of the day, or perhaps a helpful local will share a secret or two over a beer at one of the downtown pubs or micro-brewery.

Mountain bikers are thrilled to discover 129 kilometres of world-class cross country biking trails, as well downhill on the infamous Mount 7, and lift-assistance to an array of trails and features at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.

Once the day is over, you’ll be happy to share your experiences over dinner in one of the great restaurants — a surprising number for the size of population — and perhaps hear a few more secrets from one of the locals at the next table.
