Welcome To Charleston!
Nestled upon a scenic natural prairie located in the top of Missouri’s “Bootheel,” Charleston is only a ten minute drive from the confluence of the mighty Ohio and Mississippi rivers in the heart of North America. Our lovely agricultural community is situated along the Dwight D. Eisenhower Interstate highway system amid some of the richest alluvial farmland in the world.
One could debate whether Charleston, Missouri is part of the South, but there’s no dispute each April the town blossoms with distinct Southern charm, appearance, and hospitality as they host the Dogwood-Azalea Festival. Mid-April is a wonderful time in Charleston when the entire town glows with the beauty cast by millions of colorful blooms.
Named one of the Top 5 Spring Flower Festivals in the US by Fodors in 2015 and 2016, the festival is the crown jewel of this small all-American town (pop. 5,947). Charleston will celebrate the festival’s 48th year with the 2017 event April 20–23. While magnificent dogwoods and azaleas are the stars, the festival offers a virtual constellation of activities to enjoy.
Many visitors, an estimated 33,000, choose to start with the six-mile Dogwood-Azalea Trail, marked by pink dogwood blossoms painted down the city streets, which passes many beautiful Victorian homes and lovely gardens. A horse-drawn carriage ride on Saturday afternoon through the tree-lined streets certainly has appeal. Visitors enjoy arts and crafts, food booths, and live entertainment at the Dr. E Charles Rowling Park. Other highlights include a parade, home and church tours, a fish fry, a pie eating contest, an ice cream social, pig races, a plant sale, a candlelight tour, a quilt show and piano concerts.
Charleston is located on Interstate 57 about 2.5 hours south of St. Louis. We invite you to visit Charleston at your earliest opportunity.
