PHILBROOK WINE EXPERIENCE
“Wine is so much more than a beverage,” says Francis Ford Coppola. “It’s a romance, a story, a drama-all of those things that are basically putting on a show.”
Philbrook Museum of Art reprises its biennial Wine Experience April 27–28, 2018, gathering more than 50 vintners in Tulsa, Oklahoma for a weekend of drinking, dining, and philanthropy. One of the top wine fundraisers in the nation, Philbrook Wine Experience draws caliber vintners and wineries from around the world. Jean Charles Boisset of the Boisset Collection, 2016 Winemaker of the Year Michael Cruse of Cruse Wine Company, and vintner and event auctioneer Fritz Hatton of Arietta will pour their wines as table hosts. Participants also include Hirsch Vineyard, Chateau Montelena, and Francis Ford Coppola Winery. A filmmaker long before becoming a winemaker, Coppola’s The Outsiders and Rumble Fish were both filmed on location in Tulsa.
Housed on an historic 1920’s estate with 25 acres of Italianate gardens, Philbrook is a world-class art museum with a collection featuring works by Picasso, Matisse, Moran, Warhol, and Rauschenberg.
Philbrook started with a gift more than seven decades ago. In 1938, amid the cultural backdrop of big band jazz, the Dust Bowl, rapid industrialization, and Art Deco, oilman Waite Phillips transformed Tulsa by announcing the momentous gift of his mansion and surrounding gardens as an art museum and park for the community.
Tulsa was known as a boomtown in its earliest days of oil and gas. A century later, the city is amidst a cultural renaissance with a reinvigorated downtown, a vibrant arts district, and a never-before-seen level of private philanthropic efforts to reconnect the place to the people.
From its humble beginnings in 1992 to a record-breaking $3 million event in 2016, the Philbrook Wine Experience has grown into the Southwest’s premier wine event.
