Nantucket Noel & Nantucket New Years
Unlike Santa’s time-honored list rewarding children’s behavior throughout the year (will it be a slew of presents or a block of coal?), the jubilant month-long festivities dubbed “Nantucket Noel” are both nautical and nice!
On the day after Thanksgiving — November 25 — an exuberant crowd gathers on Main Street at dusk for the annual Tree Lighting and Community Caroling ceremony. Eager voices meld with the distinctive baritone of our venerable Town Crier for the traditional countdown. At the stroke of one, over 150 balsam trees magically illuminate in a sea of colored lights, welcoming Nantucket Noel.
Our beloved and wildly popular Christmas Stroll Weekend December 2-4 — follows. With the rolling Atlantic as his scenic backdrop, Santa arrives at Straight Wharf in his seaworthy “sleigh” flanked by throngs of elated children and adults. The Town is transformed into a rollicking scene from Dickens, replete with carolers in Victorian garb, youth choirs, festively decorated storefronts, with wondrous aromas and lively chatter wafting from the dock-side European-style Christmas marketplace.
Cobblestoned Main Street brims with locals and visitors alike delighting in the unique ambiance of our enchanting island, transported back in time to holidays of yore as traditional carols fill the crisp air, families scour the downtown for scavenger hunt clues, and the bustling marketplace hums with commerce.
On New Years’ Eve, the Nantucket Hotel’s Grand Ballroom will be transformed into a glittering discotheque for a sparkling reprise of “Saturday Night Fever” — featuring themed festivities, lavish dessert buffet, light bites and a champagne toast. Let the “fever” and pulsating beat whisk you back to the 80’s as you raise your flute and bid a rousing welcome to a “nautical and nice” 2017!!
