The Muscle Shoals area of northwest Alabama is often called the Small Town with the Big Sound.

From the late 1960s through the 1980s, Muscle Shoals was known as the Hit Recording Capital of the World, with recording studios turning out hits from The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, The Osmonds, Jimmy Buffet and Willie Nelson,
just to mention a few of the stars who recorded there.

But this music history is not all; the recording studios continue to turn out hits. Two studios, FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals and Muscle Shoals Sound’s 3614 Jackson Highway studio in Sheffield, offer tours. The Alabama Music Hall of Fame in Tuscumbia is a mecca for music fans of all genres. Another Tuscumbia attraction, Ivy Green, the home of Helen Keller, attracts visitors from around the world.

“The Miracle Worker,” a play about Keller, is presented in June and July in an outdoor theatre at the home. This play is the state’s official outdoor drama.More than 300 champion coonhounds are buried west of Tuscumbia, at Key Underwood Memorial Coon Dog Cemetery, the only graveyard of its kind in the world. Our eateries range from country diners to upscale restaurants. Fresh fish and steak houses are plentiful and barbecue, catfish and fried chicken are popular dishes.

The Muscle Shoals area has authentic small southern towns where people are friendly, the food is great and the scenery, including the Tennessee River and Cane Creek Canyon, is beautiful. The North Alabama Birding trail offers 13 sites in the area and bald eagle’s can be seen in several places. The golf courses are spectacular and open year-round. Fresh water fishing offers trophy sized bass, crappie and catfish. The U.S. Space and Rocket Center, Natchez Trace Parkway, Birmingham, Memphis and Nashville are close by. Come experience for yourself the Small Town with the Big Sound.
