The “Blood & Treasure on the Frontier” experience begins in the Welcome Theater where visitors are greeted by trail guide, Buck Taylor. A fully outfitted authentic tepee is on display. Artifacts related to the buffalo trade are on display, including Mooar’s own buffalo gun, a Sharps Big Fifty rifle believed to have shot “more than 14,000 buffalo” and an imposing pile of impressively lit buffalo skulls provide a “startling and dramatic” visual. Every Texan — or want-to-be Texas — needs a cowboy hat and boots. See your cowboy finery being made the old fashioned way thanks to Abilene craftspeople. Custom hats and leather goods are the specialty at 5D Custom Hats and Leather, where owner Damon Albus, who has outfitted “Larry Hagman, Wilford Brimley, and Roy Clark to name a few,” welcomes visitors to tour the workshop. James Leddy Boots have a celebrity following that includes George Jones, Mel Tillis, Larry Gatlin, Jerry Lee Lewis and Buck Owens. You may have to wait six months to a year for their own made-to-order pair, but in the meantime, they can visit the Abilene artisans where the magic happens.
